The Reliance Building |
The Reliance Building in Chicago, Illinois was built in 1895 and the basement and first floor were designed by John Root while the rest was designed by Charles B. Atwood. This was also the first skyscraper ever to have glass windows that took up a large surface area that would later become dominant in the 20th century. The glass windows would be important because they keep weather out and keep light in. The building is 15 stories tall.

The building of this skyscraper was announced in 1906 by a company who wanted to build the tallest skyscraper in the world. The skyscraper was designed by Ernest Flagg who was a critic of skyscrapers everywhere. It was a challenging build since it needed a deep foundation and it needed to have good wind bracing because of how high up it went. When it was opened in 1908 it was 47 stories tall and 612 feet tall.

Woolworth building
The Woolworth building started construction in 1910 by Frank Woolworth who wanted to create the largest income producing property in the U.S. so he built a 55 story and 792 foot high skyscraper claiming the world record at the cost of $13.5 million. $5.1 billion in today's terms. They installed the fastest elevators a swimming pool and many safety features to have a high end tenement here for people to rent.
